Tonight was the first night of Volleyball Sectionals for the PAC here in Southern Indiana.  I was amazed at the lack of involvement from some members of one of the teams.  I watch carefully at the opposing team and see many things I would like to see our girls do:

1st – How about a little SPIRIT!!  Getting down on themselves leads to just another problem they often face:  PISS POOR ATTITUDES!  Sportsmanship is key to becoming a great team but we lack that basic skill.  The coaches try (although I can say several things about that too) but ultimately the results are the direct result of the player’s and their attitudes.  We can be the greatest players and still not ever win a game when our attitudes decline as soon as the opposing team’s score increases.

2nd – Basic skills are learned from the coaches, by watching other more experienced players and practicing on a regular basis.  When the ball comes near a player, is it not a BASIC skill to call out that you have the ball?  Why is communication on the court such a HARD thing to accomplish?  I wish I would have kept track this season of the number of points we gave away just from the lack of communication!  Talk Ladies, pretend you have that cell phone attached to your ear and TALK!  Next, what about that back row?  Sitting back on your heels is NOT the way to hustle towards the ball as it is coming down at you.  Be on your toes!!  You have to be ready for the ball to head your way ANYTIME you are on the court!  This is the same as when a teammate goes up to block the ball… if they block and it goes over their fingers, then there should be someone watching to see where the ball is headed and get there!  When serving:  if you know you have a powerful serve and it always goes out, it seems to me that maybe, just maybe you should dial it back a couple notches (works the same way with your spikes!).  Players need to learn good judgement when it comes to ball control and ball placement.  As someone who played a LONG time ago when the rules were different, I can sit in the stands with the other parents and talk all day long about what I see but it’s the players and coaches that need to take a look at what’s going wrong and make a plan to fix it.

3rd – Coaches have GOT to use their players where they are the strongest and when  a player is consistently doing something wrong, put someone else in the game!  Your reserve players are there more than just to look pretty, USE THEM! What else are they there for because it’s not like they are cheering wildly and encouraging the others on a regular basis.

I hope this does not hurt anyone’s feelings as that is not my intention, however we could be better than we are right now with just some refinement and some BASIC skills.  I welcome any and all comments and/or suggestions, good or bad.  Keep in mind that this is only one person’s perspective and I am hoping that some of the players will comment and maybe tell me some things that maybe I am not seeing.

Good Luck to the sectional participants!
